I recently delivered some seminars for 17 year olds at a local further education college. I looked at their faces, some initially more attentive than others, as I explained some of the key points they need to be aware of if they are planning to get a job in the summer. I was prompted to think back to when I was their age, looking ahead to an uncertain future with a distinct lack of expert help or guidance. If only I knew then what I know now. So here are a few things I wish someone had told me when I was that fresh faced 17 year old above::
1. Surround yourself with people who accept you for who you are
2. Academic achievement does not guarantee career success
3. Identify and copy the attitudes of those who inspire you
4. Make it your mission to find work that allows you to express who you truly are
5. Be grateful and thankful for all that's good in your life now
6. Don't be afraid to say no
7. Make it a priority to develop those transferable soft skills in your part time work.
8. Make every effort not to lose touch with the special people in your life
9. Identify the things that frustrate you or make you angry. Therein may lie your vocation.
