If you're unhappy in your work you've probably been spending a lot of time searching the internet for some inspiration. With so many sites to choose from and so little time to browse, here are my top 6 websites to get you going:
1. The Muse
This American based, light hearted site provides some excellent advice on following your passion, carrying out successful job applications plus workplace etiquette . They also big up some cool American employers who really do put their employees first. You will have to sign up to receive their pearls of wisdom.
As well as having some excellent blog articles, this site has a focus on real people who have changed career which will leave you believing that it is possible to do so. There is also a forum to post your career dilemma so you can get advice from real people who have been there and done that, bought the T-shirt etc. The occasionally run career workshops in London too.
Ideal for professionals who want to escape the corporate world and do something totally different. It's less about general advice and more about posting some really exciting and inspiring opportunities all over the world. Advice and coaching is in the form of tribes - workshops in London for people who are serious about escaping the city.
This site is great for both job seekers and recruiters. There are some excellent blog articles and if you're seeking guidance on making the most of social media in your job search, this is the place to be. It's not all about escaping from your mediocre career but also about helping you to get the most from your current job.
Okay, so this site isn't strictly about career guidance. It's a bit more like general life coaching which you can apply to aspects of your career too. There is an emotional side to changing career (or any area of your life) which is often ignored by many career related sites and this site can really inspire you to take action. You'll often find me retweeting their blogs and it's definitely a favourite of mine.
6. The National Careers Service
The site claims to contain everything you need to know about career related issues. It can be overwhelming at first but once you become more familiar with it, it can be very useful. There's the usual CV advice plus a profile builder to enable you to record everything that's great about you. I often refer to the job profile area too. This is an A-Z of thousands of jobs and what they're all about from salary to skills required.
You may be aware of other sites that have been invaluable to you. I'd be interested to hear your opinion so feel free to drop me an email at mark@kickstartcareers.co.uk
