When you’re trying to identify the right career for you, part of the process is to gain an understanding of the way you like to work. Generally there are 6 ‘themes’ related to work. All jobs can be categorised into 2 or 3 themes to varying degrees. The challenge for you is to identify which themes are ‘must-have’s’ for you.
Working with people – this is any work where you are either helping, caring, teaching, advising or possibly training in some form or another for a large chunk of your day.
Working with information – here you may be dealing with words, numbers or a combination of the two. If it’s about words, you may be reading or researching information, writing summaries, reports, blogs, content for a website or maybe articles for a newspaper or magazine. If numbers are your thing, you’ll be doing calculations – interpreting numbers so other people can make sense of it.
Working with real objects – these are the hands on jobs where you may be dealing with equipment, machinery, tools, buildings, food, fashion, the human body, animals……you get the picture. You might be making something or making something look or feel better and you can physically see the results of your work.
Working with imagination – here, you’ll be using creative skills. It could be something design or performing arts related. You could be coming up with new ideas of how to do things.
Making new things happen – setting up your own business, event planning, project management etc.
Persuading or negotiating – this could be a management role or sales related.
Your ideal job will be a combination of perhaps 2 or 3 of these themes. What would be your ideal combo?
